The Evolution and Controversy of ESG: Communicating Responsibility or Responsible Communication?
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This chapter examines the intricate landscape of Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) principles, addressing their entwined relationship with politics and evolving moral standards. It presents a critical discourse on the authenticity of corporate intentions versus their actual conduct. Amidst the proliferation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and ESG rhetorics, we challenge the reader is challenged to consider whether these are substantive efforts or merely strategic communications to foster a responsible image. The chapter illuminates the potential for corporate hypocrisy, using case studies from the tobacco, finance, and fashion industries to highlight how companies might navigate the fine line of responsibility in practice.Through the lens of these sectors, the narrative unfolds to show how the original intent of ESG can be overshadowed by the political and economic agendas, sometimes leading to a reticence in fully embracing these values. The chapter emphasises the importance of critical thinking, honesty, and transparency in strategic communication. It calls on companies to integrate ESG principles into their core strategies in a way that ensures alignment between their proclaimed and enacted values.
