Spectre and Red Herring: Labelling Populism in a Country Without a Left- wing (the Case of the Czech Republic)

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

With regards to comparable countries in the region (Poland, Hungary, Slovakia), the Czech Republic is in a specific position - the president and governing coalition parties are openly liberal and pro- European, whilst the media (not just public broadcasting services) are relatively strong and independent. Nevertheless, since 2010 the Czech Republic has also seen the rise of populist parties, which has led to the gradual expunction of the left from the parliamentary map with populist parties becoming the only visible opposition. Given this situation, it is therefore necessary and interesting to observe and analyse what traditional politicians and the mainstream media label as populism. who is labelled as a populist, and, most importantly, what is labelled as populist. This chapter presents the finding that in a country without a political left, the ruling right does not make much use of the term populism to label extreme right stances of exclusivity and discrimination against minorities. On the contrary, it makes intensive use of this label to discredit social reforms, proposals for a fairer (more socially sensitive) economic redistribution, or to directly advocate the dismantling of the welfare state and the privatisation of public goods.
