The paper is an encyclopedic entry that discusses the concept of authoritarianism. It presents definitions of the concept, its origins, and literature on it. Methodological issues of research on authoritarianism, its occurrence, measurement, and comparison with other types of non-democratic regimes (especially totalitarianism) are also discussed. Finally, one specific example of classical authoritarianism is given, which is Salazar's Portugal. At the very end, the latest trends in the development of authoritarianism in the form of the so-called new authoritarianism of the 21st century are presented.
