Ausgehend von Hegels Herr-Knecht-Dialektik befasst sich der Vortrag mit dem dialektischen Verhältnis von Angst und Handeln und sucht zu zeigen, dass Angst ein wichtiges Konstituens von Handlungsfähigkeit ist. Zentral die Behauptung, dass es sich bei der Angst des Herren um abstrakte und bei der des Knechts um konkrete Angst handelt. Erstere entsteht, weil der Herr auf Distanz zur Welt geht und korreliert mit einem liberalen Freiheitsverständnis als negative Freiheit-von. Letztere ist Angst vor Fremdheit und Anstrengung, die sich aus der Vermitteltheit mit der Welt ergibt, aber in der Auseinandersetzung mit Welt aufgehoben werden kann; sie korreliert mit einem sozialen Freiheitsbegriff als Freiheit-zu.

Based on Hegel&apos;s master-slave dialectic, Paul Herden&apos;s contribution deals with the dialectical relationship between fear and action, attempting to show that fear is an important constituent of agency. At the center of his analysis is the assertion that the master&apos;s fear is abstract and the servant&apos;s fear is concrete. The former arises because the master distances himself from the world, thus correlates with a liberal understanding of freedom as negative freedom-from. The latter is a fear of strangeness and exertion that arises from mediation with the world, but can be overcome in engagement with the world and therefore correlates with a positive concept of freedom as freedom-to.
