Cultural and Social Stereotypes Influencing Patterns of Behaviour and Thinking in the British Population

In June 2016, British voters decided that Britain should leave the European Union. The next morning, Prime Minister David Cameron resigned, and although the referendum was advisory only, the UK Parliament, as is customary, accepted the result. Following the triggering of Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which sets out the procedure that allows a Member State to leave the European Union, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has initiated its withdrawal from the European Union.This article explores the traditional opinion patterns of the British electorate in relation to their cultural and social stereotypes, sentiments, wrong and right guesses and political calculations. All of these aspects have been consistent for many decades and, until 2016, have not surprised with any major political or social fluctuations. This paper will try to answer what the phenomenon is and what made the British step out of their comfort zone.
