Der Artikel befasst sich mit der Auffassung des Säkularstaates bei Thomas Hobbes und Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Hobbes, der in der Tradition des englischen Empirismus und der Sozialvertragstheorie steht, verkennt die autonome Rolle der Religion und macht aus ihr ein Mittel der Politik, die auf ökonomische Zwecke reduziert wird. Für Hegel hingegen sind Staat und Religion zwei selbstständige, aufeinander nicht reduzierbare Ausdrücke menschlicher Freiheit, in der sich der Mensch über die bloßen ökonomischen Interessen erhebt. Dieser Artikel zielt darauf ab aufzuzeigen, inwiefern die beiden Darstellungen des Verhältnisses von Staat und Religion in zwei unterschiedlichen Menschenbegriffen verwurzelt sind.

The article deals with the concept of the secular state by Thomas Hobbes and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Hobbes, standing in the tradition of English empiricism and social contract theory, disallows the autonomous role of religion and reduces it to amere instrument of politics, which he in turn subordinates to the economic goals. To the contrary, Hegel sees the state and religion as two independent and irreducible manifestations of human freedom, which allows humans to transcend the sheer economic interests. The article aims to show the way in which the both representations of the relationship of the state and religion are rooted in two different notions of humanity.
