The State and Ethical Life in Hegel’s Philosophy
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Chotaš focuses on some lesser known connotations of Hegel’s conception of the state. One of them is that according to Hegel, the state should include some aspects of “ethical life” (Sittlichkeit), to wit the laws, customs, and institutions accepted by its citizens. By “ethical” state, Hegel means a community of ethical values with which citizens can identify. The article also treats Hegel’s explanation of patriotism and the role of religion in a state. Like de Tocqueville, Hegel is convinced that genuine religion motivates believers towards the fulfilment of their civic duties. The final part of the study deals with Hegel’s concept of the state as a constitutional monarchy. Chotaš shows that according to Hegel, even the political authorities must respect the state’s ethical aspects. Hegel’s conception of ethical life in relation to the state is an original contribution to political theory.
