Uncomfortable geographies of research ethics: A view from the academic semi-periphery

This article adds to the emerging literature on the geographies of research ethics by examining experiences of scholars from Czechia, a country in the academic semi-periphery. While the study focuses specifically on ethics in research concerning development and migration and fieldwork in the Global South, its findings extend beyond this thematic scope. Previous debates around research ethics have centred on post-colonial relations between Western and Southern contexts but have overlooked the specific circumstances of researchers from the Global East. The aim of the article is to address this gap and explore potential paths forward, considering both structural limitations to the transferability of research ethics practices and procedures between distinct contexts as well as the crucial role of researchers&apos; agency. Drawing upon the authors&apos; reflection combined with semi-structured interviews with researchers conducting research in the Global South, the paper underscores the ability to constructively use discomfort for responsible research as a key, yet unevenly distributed, research capacity. It is a part of the broader capability to do research that depends not only on personal qualities but also on structural context.
