Languages differ in the way they encode grammatical structure, drawing on a wide range of strategies including the linear arrangement of words and phrases, morphological processes such as inflection, derivation, compounding and incorporation, as well as the use of specialized particles which may be realized as clitics or independent words. The latter are commonly known as function words.
