Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This paper sums up the results of non-destructive archaeological research into the remains of a settlement complex located in a low-mountain forest environment in the Brdy Forest, central Bohemia, dated by the finds of pottery to the period between the 13th/14th and the 15th/16th centuries. The site is significant for understanding the medieval non-agricultural settlement of the mountain and forested areas of the Czech lands. By analysing the natural conditions and the development of the settlement in the area, the authors concluded, in accordance with earlier research, that it was necessary to exclude a connection of the location to common agricultural activities (ploughing, or more precisely arable land). The article discusses a possible interpretation of the site as a shieling hut, a hermitage, a gamekeeper’s lodge or a dwelling of mining prospectors, metallurgists or forest craftsmen. The limited knowledge of the character of such sites for the medieval period does not allow for any clear conclusions. This, however, supports the authors’ conviction that it is necessary to search for and investigate similar sites, since without a more thorough understanding of them our ideas of the shape of the medieval landscape and the forms of its use will remain incomplete. © 2024 Masaryk University.
