Donald Trump et le discours de la peur : Mise en scène d'une terrifiante immigration

Cet article étudie la construction linguistique et la transmission de la peur autour des questions d’immigration dans le discours de Donald Trump prononcé lors de sa victoire aux primaires républicaines le 21 juillet 2016. Une étude lexicale quantitative met en évidence les termes négatifs utilisés et leur dispersion. Cette analyse montre que les lexiques de la mort et de la violence sont employés pour parler d’immigration, ce qui renforce la dichotomie nous/eux centrale dans la rhétorique Républicaine. L’expression et l’utilisation des données chiffrées sont ensuite analysées comme composantes du style hyperbolique de Trump. Souvent manipulées, elles apportent du crédit au discours et facilitent la manipulation du co-énonciateur. Le dernier procédé observé est la métaphore, qui permet à Donald Trump de présenter l’immigration clandestine comme un risque important pour la sécurité des Américains en créant la peur. Ces analyses montrent que le discours s’inscrit dans une tradition républicaine conservatrice établie, mais emprunte fortement aux rhétoriques populistes et conspirationnistes.

This article examines the linguistic construction and transmission of fear around immigration issues in Donald Trump's nomination acceptance speech on July 21st, 2016. A quantitative lexical study highlights the negative terms used by Donald Trump and their dispersion in the speech. This analysis shows that the lexicons of death and violence are used to talk about immigration. This reinforces the us/them dichotomy, central in Republican rhetoric. The expression and use of figures are then analysed as part of Trump's hyperbolic style. Often manipulated, numerical data gives credit to the discourse and facilitates the manipulation of the co-speaker. The final part of this paper is a study of metaphors, which allow Donald Trump to present illegal immigration as a major risk to American security through the medium of fear. These analyses show that this speech is part of an established conservative Republican tradition, but it also borrows heavily from populist and conspiracy theory rhetoric.
