Eriugena and Celtic Mysticism

There is a poetic, artistic quality to Eriugena that naturally lends itself to the poetic investigation that we find in the early twentieth-century work of Darras and Ezra Pound. While these can, if we are not careful, add an air of Celticism to Eriugena studies, they can also be pathways to a much richer form of Celtic mysticism, in which Eriugena emerges as its undoubted master. Eriugena’s writings are replete with ‘maritime metaphors, metaphors from nature, and even those grounded in the movements of the human body’. There is also a ‘hilaritas’ or playfulness at work, which reminds of ‘the frolicking and entangled artistry of early Celtic illuminated gospel books’, and is encapsulated in Eriugena’s idea of the ‘running God’. While Eriugena has been accused of pantheism in this regard, this is to misunderstand the function ‘hilaritas’: ‘to say everything is in God and that God is in everything is not the same as claiming that God is everything’. Eriugena deliberately plays with ‘soft boundaries’ to allow materiality a space within his account of God’s transcendence, and in so doing grounds his theology in his Irish home.
