Exploring the impact of neural machine translation on the target language after post-editing in a learning context: What about the post-editese?

The translation industry is undergoing a major technological shift, marked by a growing demand for post-editing (PE) and the integration of AI tools into the daily work of professionals. This study explores the effects of neural machine translation (NMT) on the quality of the target language after PE (English-French) in a learning context. Two learner corpora were analyzed using three automatic linguistic measures: lexical richness, average sentence length, and syntactic equivalence. The results show that, although lexical density and average sentence length are similar between PE and human translation (HT), the post-edited texts, especially those produced using DeepL, are less lexically varied and syntactically closer to the source language than those produced in HT, revealing features specific to a PE language (post-editing).
