Syntactic structures as carriers of emphatic expression in literary translation from English into Czech and vice versa
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The emphatic expression in translation represents a complex area within the field of translation, involving grammatical, lexical, stylistic and pragmatic aspects of the languages concerned. The word order as an important carrier of sentence dynamism has a substantial impact on the overall impression that a text makes on the addressee. As English and Czech represent typologically different languages, where the status of word order differs substantially, the Czech translation of the English sentences with marked word order represents a demanding and highly challenging task. The paper focuses on the English and Czech literary works of renowned authors of the 20th century, published in the original and translated versions, and their analysis and comparison in terms of adequacy of the force of the sentence dynamism. An additional goal of these observations is to examine their application in the teaching process at tertiary level. The samples collected provide a useful resource for practising translation as well as increasing students' awareness of the typological differences between the English and Czech languages.
