Elle-même confrontée très jeune a la guerre et a l'exode, choquée par l'indifférence avec laquelle le vécu des enfants exilés a longtemps été traité, l'auteur de jeunesse Elzbieta s'est attachée dans son oeuvre a (( faire revivre la manière qu'a l'enfant [...] de penser le monde }}, en revisitant le plus justement possible l'expérience intime de la petite fille qu'elle a été. La perte de tous souvenirs conscients de ses premières années et de sa culture d'origine, l'apprentissage puis l'oubli de multiples langues au cours de son chemin d'exil - y compris de sa langue natale -, la mort de son père et l'arrachement aux siens, la construction identitaire heurtée et parfois abusée, les dangers mortels de la nostalgie, mais aussi la relativisation des valeurs et l'ouverture d'esprit, l'importance des codes, des contes oraux et de l'image fixe dans sa compréhension du monde composent son bagage d'enfant exilé. Elle l'analyse avec finesse dans L'Enfance de l'art et La Nostalgie aborigène. Si l'exil est le thème explicite d'un seul album, le célèbre Petit Gris, on en retrouve de très nombreuses traces, voilées et implicites, dans l'ensemble de son oeuvre.

A child of the exodus and the war herself, the children's author Elzbieta, was shocked by the indifference with which the experiences of children in exile have long been treated. She has set out in her work to "revive the child's [...] way of thinking about the world" by revisiting as accurately as possible the intimate experience of the child she once was. The loss of all conscious memories of her early years and her culture of origin, the learning and forgetting of multiple languages in the course of exile, including her native language, the death of his father and the uprooting from his family, the shaky and sometimes abused construction of his identity, the mortal dangers of nostalgia, but also the relativization of values and open-mindedness, the importance of codes, oral tales and still images in her understanding of the world are all part of her background as a child in exile. She analyses it with finesse in L'Enfance de l'Art and La Nostalgie aborigène. Although exile is the main theme of only one album, the famous Petit Gris, there are many traces of it, sometimes veiled and implicit, throughout his work.
