Crisis Communication and Racism in Sport: When cultural and organizational values collide
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Sport organizations are facing increasing expectations to assume leadership roles in the ongoing battle against racism, primarily through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. This poses a communication challenge compounded by social media and the influence of players or coaches as cultural icons. In the realm of European football, where clubs are increasingly drawing talent from various countries and cultural backgrounds, the pressure to address racism and take a cultural leadership role has intensified. When incidents of racism arise during games involving teams from diverse cultural backgrounds, each with varying levels of sensitivity to racism, clubs are faced with the complex task of crafting crisis communication strategies to restore their reputation among stakeholders in tension. This chapter reviews the crisis communication efforts of two Czech clubs amidst accusations of racism by employing the framework of Integrated Response Theory (IRT) strategies and the Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) postures and strategies to evaluate the communication approaches used by the clubs.
