The symposium was focusing on the research of women's opportunities in science, in various social science fields. It deals with the comparing this phenomenon in the sphere of state institutes, institutes of the Academies of Sciences across Europe, as well as in universities during the last years of the 19th and 20th century. The research is focusing on the various positions behind which female scholars were hidden, often as late as the first half of the 20th century. It deals with period where, often in one scientific team or one household in Europe, coexistence, and cooperation of people of different ethnic groups, nations, races, and different geographical origins was quite common, which was significantly changed by the WWII.The papers target families of scholars, the wives, the daughters who often participated in the scientific work of the male scholars. The symposium analyses the influence, caused by the political and war turbulences, on the academic community. More specifically, the change of role of female from hidden family assistants to scientists at universities and other academic institutions has been examined. It was following the changes, that presented more academic opportunities for women, as well as influence of the transformation of the scientific politics and the impact of emigration on the status and academic position of female researchers.Symposium presented continuity of the important research on the role of women in science and it is held on behalf of a Commission on Women and Gender in Science, Technology and Medicine.
