The article discusses the origins and ancient developments of the genre of figured poetry; the main focus is on the supreme collection of thirty one poems composed by Publilius Optatianus Porfyrius, a fourth-century Roman author of African origin. His body of writings is analyzed from a number of perspectives, including modern structuralist and post-structuralist theories of language as well as reader-response criticism.
