Protection of the Imperial Majesty in the Roman Principate

The paper deals with the problem of protection of Roman emperors in the Principate, and focuses on the alleged illegality of accusations and trials. The emperor's legal position and authority, the evolution of the so-called extraordinary jurisdiction andthe role of the Roman senate are taken into consideration while examining the issue. The paper also addresses the question of the value of Roman citizenship face to face with the protection of the imperial maiestas. Attention is paid to the relationshipbetween the protection of the maiestas populi Romani and the maiestas of the emperor, his (divine) predecessors and his family.
