„Wenn das göttliche Gesicht nicht zu sehen ist, wie kann es dargestellt werden?“ Diese Frage kommt von einer der ersten Beschreibungen eines Bildes des heiligen Gesicht vom sechsten Jahrhundert, und ist auch diejenige die Herbert L. Kessler in diesem Essay zu beantworten versucht. Schritt für Schritt bietet der Autor verschiedene Einblicke in die diversen Themen wie die zwei Naturen der Ikone, ihre theologischen Anforderungen, die strengen Auflagen für die künstlerische Darstellung von Symbolen, oder Beziehung zwischen Text und Darstellung in den Fällen von Identifikationsinschriften. Außerdem erklärt Kessler warum die teuersten und exklusivsten Materialien, Medien, Techniken und Verzierungen für diese Bilder verwendet und bereitgestellt wurden.

If the Divine face can not be seen, how can it be depicted? This question comes from one of the first descriptions of an image of the holy face from sixth century, and also is the one which Herbert L. Kessler is trying to answer in this essay. Step by step, the author offers various insights on the different topics such as the icon’s two natures, its theological demands, strict conditions of artistic display or relationship between text and depiction present in the form of identification inscriptions. Moreover, explanation why the most expensive and exclusive materials, mediums, techniques and ornaments were used is provided. In the last subheads Kessler also states why these images were not for believers only the representations of the Christ, God or Christian saints, and how through their mediums, liturgical rituals and context, became the expression of the real presence of something invisible and divine.
