Der deutsch-böhmische Künstler Gabriel von Max (Prag 1840 ? 1915 München) gilt als einer der Hauptvertreter der Münchner Malerschule. Nach seinem Studium an der Königlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste in München blieb er dauerhaft in Bayern und kehrtespäter als Professor für Historienmalerei an die Münchner Akademie zurück. In bürgerlichen und höfischen Kreisen waren seine religiösen Genre- und Stimmungsbilder hoch anerkannt. In der aktuellen kunsthistorischen Forschung gibt es durchaus noch Bedarf,sich mit Gabriel von Max zu beschäftigen: Sein in alle Welt verstreutes Werk, seine oft rätselhaften Darstellungen, die sich einer vorschnellen Interpretation entziehen, halten noch viele offene Fragen bereit. Das Kunstforum besitzt mit acht Gemälden eine der größten Sammlungen von Gabriel von Max. Der Vortrag ist von aktuellen Erkenntnissen zu seinen Gemälden im Kunstforum sowie auch in anderen Sammlungen ausgegangen.

The Bohemian-German Painter Gabriel von Max (Prague 1840 ? 1915 Munich) is considered as one of the main representatives of the Munich school of painting in the 19th century. After his study at the King_s Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, he settled for keeps in Bavaria and then returned at the Academy as a professor of historical painting. His religious, genre and emotional paintings were very appreciated in bourgeois circles and at the King_s court. A need to focus Max remains in a contemporary art-historical research. Many open questions are put by both, an incomplete knowledge of his oeuvre which is spread all over the world, as well as his often enigmatic works which resist clear-cut interpretations. Kunstforum in Regensburg with its eight paintingsby Gabriel von Max owns one of the biggest collections of this artist. The lecture results from an actual research of his works at the Kunstforum and other collections.
