A Woman’s Body, an Athlete’s Heart : A Comparative Reading of Althea Gibson's and Wilma Rudolph's Memoirs
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The paper focuses on female role models in African American sports and presents results of a comparative study of memoirs of two legendary African American athletes; namely those of Althea Gibson - I Always Wanted to Be Somebody, published in 1958, and that of Wilma Rudolph – Wilma, published in 1977. Several decades ago, they faced dual oppression due to both their gender and race. They both were able to cope with the situation in their own ways. The paper introduces Gibson and Rudolph both as women and athletes and presents readers with information gathered from their memoirs on what it was like to be an athlete and a woman in the USA of the 1950s and after.
