Une saison dans la vie d'Emmanuel (1965), le troisieme roman de Marie-Claire Blais, a établi la réputation de la romanciere au Québec et en France (Prix Médicis 1966). Le style narratif baroque se prete a de multiples interprétations: s'agit-il d'une parodie du roman d'enfance? Une parodie du Bildungsroman? Une parodie de la biographie fictive? L'histoire semble etre le prolongement d'une longue lignée de jeunes héros allant des jeunes conquérants de Balzac aux adolescents blessés de Valery Larbaud, aux enfants terribles de Cocteau et aux jeunes hommes cyniques et violents de Roger Nimier. Le monde des adultes, frappé par les incertitudes noétiques et éthiques, est soumis a un examen impitoyable par des enfants qui construisent leur monde a part. Blais ajoute une ironie qui, tout en inversant l'axiologie et en transcendant les themes interdits (homosexualité, inceste, prostitution), établit un ensemble d'assertions / négations ou la cruauté existentielle, dépourvue de toute sentimentalité, implique la beauté et la rédemption par la beauté. Cette justification esthétique du Mal par la médiation des enfants est analysée en relation avec le personnalisme comme arriere-plan axiologique.

Une saison dans la vie d’Emmanuel (1965), the third novel by Marie-Claire Blais, has established the reputation of the novelist in Quebec and in France (Prix Médicis 1966). The baroque like narrative style lends itself to multiple interpretations: Is it a parody of childhood novel? A parody of the Bildungsroman? A parody of the fictional biography? The story seems to be an extension to a long line of young heroes progressing from Balzac's young conquerors to Valery Larbaud's injured adolescents, to Cocteau's enfants terribles and to Roger Nimier's cynical and violent young men. The adult world, struck by noetic and ethical uncertainties, is subjected to a ruthless examination by children who build their world aside. Blais adds an irony that, while reversing the axiology and transcending prohibited themes (homosexuality, incest, prostitution), sets up a set of assertions / negations where the existential cruelty, devoid of any sentimentality, involves beauty and redemption through beauty. This aesthetic justification of Evil though the mediation of children is analyzed in connection with the personalism as an axiological background.
