In der paganen Antike ist der Gebrauch von adiuro epigraphisch auf wenig mehr als ein Dutzend defixiones beschränkt, die alle lokal konzentriert in Carthago und Hadrumentum zutage kamen. Meist lautet die einschlägige Wendung adiuro te/vos … per … ut/ne. Beschworen werden so in aller Regel ein oder mehrere Dämonen, die durch eine höhere Macht veranlasst werden sollen, dem oder den Opfern der Fluchtafel Schaden zuzufügen.

The use of the verb adiuro in antiquity is attested on about dozen curse tablets, all found in Cartage and Hadrumetum. Normally the formula goes like this: adiuro te/vos … per … ut/ne. Implored are usually one or more daemons, who are compelled by a higher divine entity to harm the target of the curse.
