Nell’ambito delle interpretazioni figurative in cui è stata declinata l’interpretazione dell’Aldilà nel Basso Medioevo, un ruolo fondamentale svolge l’organizzazione della geografia dei regni ultraterreni. Fra XII e XIII secolo si assiste alla graduale sistematizzazione di quei luoghi “terzi” che nel tempo erano intervenuti a complicare il dualismo iniziale, di matrice agostiniana, di Inferno e Paradiso: si tratta di quegli ambienti ultraterreni conosciuti con i nomi di Antinferno, Limbo, Paradiso dei Giusti, Paradiso d’attesa, refrigerium interim etc., che solo all’inizio del XIV secolo troveranno una sistemazione definitiva e si cristallizzeranno attorno ai tre maggiori regni dell’Aldilà: l’Inferno, il Paradiso e il Purgatorio. In questo articolo si indagano alcune descrizioni e raffigurazioni di alcuni di questi terzi luoghi dell’Aldilà al fine di leggerli come un laboratorio fondamentale per la sistematizzazione tripartita propria dei secoli basso-medievali (Inferno-Purgatorio-Paradiso), in vista di una futura e più articolata lettura dello svolgimento del tema iconografico purgatoriale.

In the figurative interpretations of the Afterlife in the Late Middle Ages, the organization of the geography of the otherworldly realms plays a fundamental role. Between twelfth and thirteenth century takes place a gradual systematization of the "third" places that complicated the initial dualism of Hell and Paradise. Only at the beginning of the 14th century these otherworldly realms known as "Antinfernus", "Limbo", "Paradise of the Justs", "refrigerium interim" will find a definitive arrangement and will crystallize around the three major realms of the Afterlife: Hell, Paradise and Purgatory. This article investigates some descriptions and figurative representations of some of these third places of the Afterlife in order to read them as a fundamental laboratory for the tripartite systematization of the lower Middle Ages (Hell-Purgatory-Paradise), in view of a future and more articulated reading of the development of the purgatorial iconographic theme.
