Development of methods measuring analytic and holistic cognitive style
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The theory of analytic and holistic cognitive style postulates cross-cultural differences in cognition and perception. Particularly, analytic perceivers focus more on details and focal objects, whereas their holistic counterparts pay more attention to the background and the object as its whole. Although Westerners should be more analytical and Easterners more holistic, these assumptions were not fully confirmed in our previous cross-cultural researches. Moreover, despite the popularity of the construct, there is no widely accepted method of measuring the analytic and holistic cognitive style. Hence, this contribution provides a description of the most promising computer-based methods of cognitive style measurement, namely: E-CSA-W/A created on the basis of traditional Cognitive Style Analysis (CSA), three variations of Compound Figures Test (CFT) which are composed of Navon hierarchical figures, and Absolute-Relative test which is an adaptation of Framed-Lined Test (FLT). The presentation also contains an analysis of preliminary results of psychometric properties of these methods. In addition, strengths and weaknesses of mentioned methods as well as their relation to the theory will be discussed.
