Das internationale Literatursymposium „Ungar–Kafka“ fand vom 4. bis 6. Oktober 2023 im Neuen Rathaus in Brünn statt. Organisiert vom Deutschen Kulturverein Region Brünn in Zusammenarbeit mit der Stadt und im Rahmen des Festivals „Meeting Brno“ widmete sich die Veranstaltung den Jubiläen von Hermann Ungar (130. Geburtstag) und Franz Kafka (140. Geburtstag). Zum Programm gehörten eine öffentliche Diskussion mit Ungars Enkelin Vicky Unwin, ein Workshop für Studierende sowie eine Reihe von Vorträgen renommierter Persönlichkeiten wie Reiner Stach, Ingeborg Fiala-Fürst, Milan Uhde und Jiří Munzar. Die Beiträge thematisierten unter anderem Ungars literarisches Erbe, Kafkas Erfahrungen im Ersten Weltkrieg und das kulturelle Gedächtnis der deutschsprachigen Literatur in den böhmischen Ländern. Besonderes Augenmerk galt den Bemühungen, vergessene Autoren in den literarischen Kanon zurückzuführen, sowie den Herausforderungen von Exil, Identität und Erinnerung. Der Beitrag reflektiert die Bedeutung biografischen Erzählens, der Public History und des interkulturellen Dialogs für das heutige literarische Verständnis.

The international literary symposium “Ungar–Kafka” took place from October 4 to 6, 2023, at the New Town Hall in Brno. Organized by the German Cultural Association of the Brno Region in cooperation with the city and as part of the festival “Meeting Brno,” the event honored the anniversaries of Hermann Ungar (130th) and Franz Kafka (140th). The symposium included a public discussion with Ungar’s granddaughter Vicky Unwin, a student workshop, and a series of lectures by renowned figures such as Reiner Stach, Ingeborg Fiala-Fürst, Milan Uhde, and Jiří Munzar. The talks explored Ungar’s literary legacy, Kafka’s experiences during WWI, and the cultural memory of German-language literature in the Czech lands. Particular attention was paid to efforts to reintroduce forgotten authors into the literary canon and the challenges of exile, identity, and remembrance. The article reflects on the significance of biographical storytelling, public history, and intercultural dialogue in shaping literary understanding today.
