Der Workshop beschäftigte sich mit Franz Kafkas ambivalenter, zwischen Ethnozentrismus und Exotismus schwankender Wahrnehmung des italienischen Kulturkreises und untersuchte die Auswirkungen unmittelbar gemachter Erfahrungen auf sein literarisches Werk. Anhand motivischer Bezüge zwischen autobiographischen und literarischen Schriften wurde veranschaulicht, dass Kafkas Italien/Italiener-Bild stark von Stereotypen geprägt war, die noch in der Gegenwart im deutschen Sprachraum verbreitet sind. Als hauptursächlich hierfür ließen sich die unterschiedlichen, kulturell kodierten Kommunikationsstrategien in abschlussorientierten, monochronen und reservierten Kulturen einerseits und in beziehungsorientierten, polychronen und expressiven Kulturen andererseits identifizieren, wie sie in der interkulturellen Kommunikationsforschung beschrieben werden. Anhand ausgewählter Prosatexte und einem Abschnitt aus dem Roman „Der Prozess“ wurde herausgearbeitet, wie sich Kafkas Attitüden zur interkulturellen Sensibilisierung im Deutschunterricht einsetzen lassen.

The workshop dealt with Franz Kafka’s ambivalent perception of the Italian cultural sphere, which fluctuated between ethnocentrism and exoticism, and examined the effects of direct experiences on his literary work. Motivic references between autobiographical and literary writings were used to illustrate that Kafka’s image of Italy/Italy was strongly influenced by stereotypes that are still widespread in the German-speaking world today. The main reasons for this were identified as the different, culturally coded communication strategies in conclusion-oriented, monochronic and reserved cultures on the one hand and in relationship-oriented, polychronic and expressive cultures on the other, as described in intercultural communication research. Based on selected prose texts and a section from the novel “The Trial”, it was worked out how Kafka’s attitudes can be used for intercultural sensitisation in German lessons.
