La question du relativisme moral et culturel n’est pas seulement l’un desproblèmes académiques fondamentaux, mais aussi l’un des aspects de notre vie quo-tidienne. Cependant, au cours du 20esiècle, l’éthique a été relégué dans le domainede l’art, en particulier par la philosophie analytique, représentée dans l’entre-deux-guerres par le Cercle de Vienne. Cependant, à l’instar du philosophe post‐analytiqueRichard Rorty et de son concept des histoires sentimentales qui vise à accroître notrecapacité d’empathie, il semble que l’art puisse contribuer à l’émergence d’une com-munauté humaine tolérante et respectueuse. Bien que les types de perception de ceshistoires puissent varier, selon les conclusions de Maryane Wolf, étayées par la scienceneurocognitive, c’est la lecture, plus précisément la lecture profonde, qui peut affecternotre capacité d’empathie. En d’autres termes, la littérature peut changer le monde etpeut-être, par conséquent, nous libérer de l’emprise du relativisme culturel.

The question of moral and cultural relativism is not only one of the fundamental academic problems but also one of our everyday lives. However, during the twentieth century, ethics was relegated to the realm of art, especially by analytic philosophy, represented in the interwar period by the so-called Vienna Circle. However, using the example of the post-analytic philosopher Richard Rorty and his concept of sentimental stories which aim to increase our capacity for empathy, it seems that art can contribute to a tolerant and respectful human community. Although the types of perception of these stories may vary, according to Maryane Wolf’s conclusions supported by neurocognitive science, it is reading, specifically deep-reading, that can affect our capacity for empathy. In other words, literature can change the world and perhaps, therefore, free us from the grip of cultural relativism.
