Conjunctive Adverbials as Prototypical Textual Themes in the Genre of Research Articles
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The present contribution employs the occurrence of conjunctive adverbials (CAs) viewed as prototypical textual themes in academic discourse – in particular in the genre of research articles. Theme zones play a crucial role in the construction of discourse coherence (Fetzer 2008) and conjunctive adverbials (i.e., conjuncts – Quirk et al. 1985, linking adverbials – Biber et al. 1999) are their typical means in the formal discourse such as the genre of research articles. The discourse analysis is based on a research article corpus of 100 published papers (50 representing soft (SKF) and another 50 hard knowledge fields – HKF) in ten different academic disciplines (five representing SKF and the other five HKF). It investigates semantic roles of CAs and their pragmatic implications, and it also looks into the frequency of occurrence of individual semantic categories as well as particular CAs. The research results show that CAs can be viewed as an inseparable part of a rich arsenal typical of the formal academic discourse and that themes of this kind contribute to successful communication between the producer and receiver of a formal piece of writing.
