Is Tariff Disintegration of the Passenger Rail Transport a Problem?
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The aim of this paper is to present the problem of the tariff disintegration, to identify whether it can discourage passengers from travelling by train and to find out whether the National Tariff which is considered by the Ministry of Transport will be used by passengers. The empirical analysis is based on our consumer survey. Results have shown that the tariff disintegration will discourage small part of passengers from travelling by train. Discouraged passengers can be divided into three categories. The first one is the owners of the card called “režijka” (staff discount card) which allows employees of the Czech Railways and their family members to travel by trains of the Czech Railways for CZK 1 100 (approximately EUR 43) per year. Elderly people belong to the second category. For them purchasing more tickets is more time-consuming because they are not familiar with payment on the Internet. The last category is holders of season tickets for whom the tariff disintegration leads to more expensive travelling on routes with more railway operators. Data from the consumer survey indicate that the National Tariff will be used by a small part of passengers. As opposed to that, due to the tariff disintegration, approximately 45 % of potentially discouraged passengers will remain loyal to the rail transport thanks to the National Tariff.
