The study focuses on one narrow area of word order that seems to cause problems to Czech native speakers learning English as a second language, i.e. the position of adverbials within a clause. The scope is narrowed down to adverbials represented by one-word adverb phrases, modifying VP or higher structures, syntactically integrated into clauses. Adverbials are defined in contrast to other elements, and special attention is paid to the specific positions of adverbials functioning as verb phrase modifiers. The problem of placement of adverbials is particularly significant from the point of view of second language acquisition. Since adverbials are always labelled as the most flexible element in English clause structure, learners can very easily get the impression that they are free elements. Thus in the second chapter there are presented some concrete examples of actual textbooks to show how they deal with the topic.
