By Algerian Arabs, Kabyles are often stigmatized as bad Muslims and sometimes even as badAlgerians. This contemporary image of Kabyles shared by Kabyles themselves, Arabs and Europeans has a clear continuity with the image created by French colonial administrators and scholars. Although Kabyle culture was portrayed as oral in opposition to Arab written culture, Kabyles were not debased as "primitives".
