Der Artikel analysiert zwei frühe Werke Hugo von Hofmannsthals: Das kleine Welttheater und Das Märchen der 672. Nacht. Im Vordergrund stehen künstlerisch empfindende Figuren: der Dichter, der Künstler (im Kleinen Welttheater) und der "Dilettant" (im Märchen der 672. Nacht). Der Artikel versucht an den Beispielen der analysierten Figuren die für den Künstler bzw. den Dilettanten typischen Charakterzüge zu definieren. Im Artikel werden auch die Begriffe "Präexistenz" und "Existenz" erklärt und ihre Bedeutung für Hofmannsthals Werk erläutert. Die Typen des Künstlers und des "Dilettanten" werden auf der Folie dieser Begriffe charakterisiert.

The article analyzes two early works by Hugo von Hofmannsthal: The Little Theatre of the World and The Tale of the 672nd Night. The main attention is paid to artistically inclined characters: the poet, the artist (in The Little Theatre of the World) andthe "dilettante" (in The Tale of the 672nd Night). Using the example of the analyzed characters, the article tries to define the character traits typical for the artist and for the dilettante as well. It also clarifies the terms "pre-existence" and "existence" and explains their meaning for Hofmannsthal's work. The depiction of the artistically inclined characters is made in the background of the terms mentioned above.
