Time and Creation in the Timaeus

Plato's Timaeus explores the genesis of the world and its structural dependence on external causes. Central to the controversy in the secondary literature is whether we should take the creation of the world literary or whether we should concentrate on the structural dependence only. This chapter explores Timaeus' views on time and its relevance to this controversy. I claim that in passages 37c6–39e2, Timaeus argues that time originated with the heavens and is essentially linked to planetary movements, suggesting the non-existence of time outside our world. However, in other passages, he also hints at a 'before' the creation of the heavens and considers the soul's precedence over the body. In this chapter, I analyse the bearing these conceptions of time have on the nature of motion and how our world imitates the paradigm. I conclude that understanding Timaeus' worldview requires recognising a more expansive concept of time, not limited to celestial rotations.
