Gadolinium, a rare earth element (REE) widely used in industries, medicine, and agriculture, is an emerging environmental contaminant due to its increasing presence in ecosystems. This study investigated the occurrence of anthropogenic gadolinium (Gdanth) in commonly consumed foods, i.e., flour (wheat, spelt, rye), rice, and carrots sourced from Europe and Asia, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Positive gadolinium anomalies (Gdanom) were identified in all sample types, with median Gdanth concentrations ranging from 3.05 to 10.5 mu g kg-1 and notable variability between samples. Wheat flour exhibited the highest concentrations, while rice showed the lowest, suggesting varying environmental and agricultural influences. This research provides novel evidence of Gdanth in food and highlights its origin, particularly from the widespread use of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GdCA) in medical imaging. The findings underscore the necessity for monitoring Gdanth in food chains to mitigate potential risks to human health and food safety.
