    The aim of the paper is to compare traditionally used diagnostic methods for assessment of timber integrated in historical buildings with a newly proposed method of pin pushing. The new method using a diagnostic instrument for "in situ" timber assessment is based on the principle of measuring mechanical resistance against a tool (pin) penetration into wood. Experimental measuring was conducted using three softwood beams with damaged heads extracted from a historical building of an old citizen's house in Prague. The beams were assessed optically, further by means of stress wave, resistance drilling, GPR, screw withdrawal, and finally, by pin pushing. Afterwards, the beams were cut and analyzed for their physical and mechanical properties using standard samples. The results were used for a verification of measuring by the specific NDT devices. The results of the tests mainly manifest a very good correlation of the mean force necessary for pin pushing into timber with wood density and strength in compression perpendicular to the grain ascertained using the standard samples. The dependencies between the measured parameters and the density or the strength in compression perpendicular to the grain were stronger within pin pushing than within the other NDT methods.
