Different hydrolysis strategies (acidic, alkaline, and enzymatic) will be tested in close collaboration with BRNO. Further, we will work on the separation of different fractions and analysing their composition: content of carbon, nitrogen, glycerol, and fatty acids. Based on the composition results NMBU-IMT and BRNO will work on developing different cultivation media for SmF, where different hydrolysis fractions will be combined in the following ways: (1) glycerol + nitrogen source (yeast extract /peptone /ammonium salts / proteinaceous by-products), (2) glycerol + fatty acids + nitrogen source (yeast extract /peptone /ammonium salts / proteinaceous by-products), (3) glycerol + sugars + nitrogen source (yeast extract /peptone /ammonium salts / proteinaceous by-products). All proteinaceous by-products will be provided by Norilia. For screening media the following fungal strains for high lipid production will be used: Mucor spp., Rhizopus spp. and Mortierella spp. for both lipid and carotenoid production, in addition Rhodotorula spp., Sporobolomyces spp., Cystofilobasidium spp., Metchnikowia spp. and Phaffia (Yarrowia) spp. Yeasts will be provided by BRNO.
