Recently, microbial biotechnologists focuses on the use of extremophiles as a platform strains in industrial biotechnological processes since the use of extremophiles brings many benefits. Primarily, reduction of the cost of process is possible due to unusual cultivation conditions that enable to work in a semi-sterile or non-sterile process. Therefore, we focus on screening the biotechnological potential of extremophiles, especially thermophiles. In this work we selected 14 species of the thermophilic genus Geobacillus and 1 species of the closely related genus Saccharococcus and we have screened the range of the substrates which can be utilized by the tested bacteria and, furthermore, we have also screened biotechnological potential of the selected representatives for production of various valuable metabolites.
