Der Text untersucht, wie sich das Verständnis von künstlerischer Freiheit tschechischer Künstler zwischen den 1970er und 1990er Jahren wandelte und wie diese veränderte Auffassung von Freiheit die Kunstbegriffe im Allgemeinen prägte und prägte. Der Essay zeichnet die Entwicklung von der stark individualisierten Freiheit nach, die sich in der teils extremen Körperkunst der 1970er Jahre ausdrückte, hin zur vergleichsweise gemäßigten politischen Kunst der 1990er Jahre, die die Grenzen des neu etablierten demokratischen Systems auslotete.

The text explores how Czech artists’ understanding of artistic freedom changed from the 1970s to the 1990s, and how this shifting notion of freedom shaped what was and is considered art more generally. The essay traces a movement from the highly individual freedom expressed in the sometimes extreme body art of the 1970s to the comparatively tame political art of the 1990s, which tested the limits of the newly established democratic system.
