The impact of portable analytical technologies has been growing rapidly influenced by factors such as rising medical care costs and need for rapid and on-site answers. Liquid chromatography has developed over the last almost half a century into a powerful analytical technique recognised as essential in many areas for everyday analysis, however with limited advances allowing its use as a portable analytical technique. In pursuing miniaturised and portable LC, we have chosen a concept based on a modular LEGO-like system with miniaturised, mostly off-the-shelf components, assembled on a microfluidic breadboard, allowing great flexibility of design. The key components include miniaturised modular microsyringe pumps, electrically actuated microfluidic switching valves and a sample injection valve, a capillary column and UV-LED detector [1,2,3].
