Zygopterid ferns are known from the Devonian to the early Permian and played an important role in palaeobiotopes during the Carboniferous and Permian Periods. Fossil remains of zygopterid ferns are known either as permineralizations (stems or rachises: Metaclepsydropsis P. Bertrand, Diplolabis Renault, Zygopteris Corda; reproductive organs: Biscalitheca Mamay and Monoscalitheca Abbott) or as compressions or impressions (Nemejcopteris Barthel, Schizostachys Grand’Eury, Corynepteris Baily, Alloiopteris Potonié). The interpretation of the evolution of zygopterid ferns is traditionally based on anatomy and compression species are used to complement the picture.
