Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The restoration of the interior of St Bartholomew’s Parish Church has opened an opportunity to present the statue of the Pilsen Madonna, which is the foundation and key for an exhibition concept that has been realised thanks to cooperation between the Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen and the Catholic Theological Faculty at Charles University in Prague. The Pilsen Madonna, made in Peter Parler’s St Vitus lodge in Prague before 1384, is one of the cardinal works from the early phase of the Beautiful Style, which together with the French court milieu evidently initiated the formation of the style known as International Gothic. The interdisciplinary study of various aspects related to the Pilsen Madonna – her cult, her replicas and her function since the late 14th century – has determined the structure of this exhibition and this book. At the heart of the exhibition is the presenting of the original Pilsen Madonna with her spiritual, cultic and historical context (In the Presence of the Holy; The Artistic Culture at St Bartholomew’s Church). Sculptures and paintings demonstrating the forms and possibilities of art from Prague during the formation of the Beautiful Style have been assembled in section The Beautiful Style’s Formation and Forms. The next part of the exhibition presents sculptural replicas and the reasons for their creation in the 15th century (15th-Century Replicas of the Pilsen Madonna and the Reasons for Their Creation). Artefacts related to the veneration of the Pilsen Madonna in the modern age and in contemporary history comprise the final part (The Cult of the Pilsen Madonna in the Modern Age and Contemporary History: A Nascent Theme in the History of Art). The studies and catalogue entries shed a new light on spiritual context of the Madonnas of Beautiful Style, their operating in churches as well as their commissioning and spreading. The latest study traces back the development of the cult of the Pilsen Madonna in modern history (17th - 19th centuries) and reconstructs the beginnings of its life in the history of art and art historical research.
