The Fields of Digital Research: Topics and Developments
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The emergence of the internet and ICT technologies has had a profound influence on society. The worldwide network now encompasses 5.35 billion users, or 66.2% of the global population. The emergence of AI and the advent of the “web 5.0” age have resulted in an increasing acknowledgment of the significance of digital technology in comprehending culture, society, human experience, and the social domain. The collection of large amounts of data, known as “big data”, that is created through digital activities and interactions has resulted in a shift in the field of social sciences known as the “Digital turn” paradigm. Sociologists encounter difficulties when doing research on the digital society, with a specific focus on two separate approaches: examining phenomena within digital environments and studying items that are intrinsically digital. The continual discourse surrounding digital techniques elicits tensions and challenges related to epistemology, methodology, and ethics. Conventional methodologies in social research are typically thought to have different properties compared to digital data, however it is vital to recognize any distortions. The diversity of digital research practices in different domains stems from researchers' capacity to modify and incorporate old methodologies and approaches. The selection of methodological techniques is contingent upon the research design and the precise research inquiries made by the scholar. Digital methodologies are especially suitable for studying indigenous digital phenomena or exploring phenomena associated with hidden or hard-to-reach populations, such as sexual minorities or deviant phenomena.
