Bereits seit dem Mittelalter spielte das Gebiet der Tschechischen Republik eine wichtige Rolle für Entstehung von vielen Obstsorten. Alte Landsorten, die noch am Anfang des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts angebaut wurden und die sich noch heute in alten Obstanlagen befinden, zeugen davon. Entstehung von diesen Obstsorten war ein spontaner Prozess, der mit hoher Flächendichte von Obstanlagen und mit der Tradition vom Obstbau im Zusammenhang steht. Erhaltung und Bewertung von diesen genetisch wertvollen Landsorten ist unsere erstrangige Aufgabe. Ursprung von diesen alten Obstsorten ist oft unbekannt. Die einzelnen Sorten entstanden ungezielt und verbreiteten sich dank ihren guten Eigenschaften. Sie sind den bodenklimatischen Bedingungen in einzelnen Regionen voll angepasst. Leider heute sind wir noch immer nicht fähig, ihr genetisches Potenzial völlig zu erkennen und zu nutzen. Schon seit langem werden Landsorten und lokale Sorten fast nicht mehr vermehrt. The Role of the Czech Research Institutes in Long Term Preservation of Fruit Generesources

The territory of the Czech Republic has played an important part in the creation of many woody fruit cultivars since medieval times. There is evidence of a large number of landraces widely cultivated as late as in the beginning of the 20th century. Manyof them are still possible to meet in old plantations. Old landraces, representing our most valuable genetic material, must be conserved for future generations. We do not know usually their origin but their creation was a spontaneous process and regarding their properties they got spread widely. These landraces and obsolete cultivars are perfectly adapted to the soil-climatic conditions of a considered region. At present we do not know their breeding value and potentials, that may meet future breeding demands. Because local landraces are seldom offered and there is a serious threat of their extinction, we started their gathering.
