Preservation of Local Landraces of Currant in Territory of the Czech Republic.
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The Czech Republic has played an important part in the creation of many woody fruit cultivars since medieval times. Many landraces were widely cultivated as late as in the beginning of the 20th century. The evolution of these cultivars was spontaneous, resulting mainly from a large density of fruit plants and cultivated plant traditions. Old landraces, representing invaluable genetic material, must be conserved for future generations. The origin may not be known but they were widely grown. These landraces and obsolete cultivars are adapted to the soil-climatic conditions of a particular region. At present their breeding value and potentials are unknown but they may meet future demands. Because local landraces are seldom commercially offered and they are vulnerable to be lost, we started to collect them. This project is organized through pomologists in the Czech Republic, who have a good overview on local cultivars.
