Evaluation of late ripening sweet cherry cultivars in Czech germplasm collection
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) is a globally important vegetatively propagated fruit crop. Due to high returns, cherry is gaining popularity in commercial orchards in Central Europe including the Czech Republic. In 2016, there were 889 ha of commercial sweet cherry plantations in the Czech Republic. Sweet cherries are also regularly grown and very popular in home gardens. The evaluated sweet cherry genebank was planted on Prunus avium rootstock at an altitude of 320 m at a spacing of 6.0 x 6.0 m in 1989. Three trees represent each cultivar in the collection. Average annual temperature in the locality is 8.4 °C and a precipitation 663.5 mm. Fruits of late ripening sweet cherry cultivars ripen 4 weeks or later after the reference cultivar ´Burlat´. Late ripening sweet cherry cultivars have a higher commercial importance than sweet cherries ripening early in the season. The evaluation of economically important characters in 24 late ripening sweet cherry cultivars carried out in the years 2015 and 2016 is reported here. Evaluated cultivars varied in ripening time, fruit size and fruit quality. Only Czech cultivar ´Techlovan´ (9.56 g) had an average weight of fruit higher than 9.00 g. ´Kordia´, ´Kristin´, ´Summit´, ´Sunburst´, ´Thurn Taxis´, ´Techlovan´ and ´Techlovicka´ exceeded in taste. ´Ladeho pozdní´ was distinctively the latest cultivar, ripening 11 weeks after reference cultivar ´Burlat´. Further ´Hedelfingen´,´Hudson´, ´Kordia´ and ´Regina´ ripened 6 weeks after ´Burlat´. The most important sweet cherry varieties are described in the presented paper. Obtained phenotypic data will be associated with results of molecular genetic studies and later used in breeding programmes.
