Human Capital and Economic Outcomes in European Labour Markets: Evidence from 2018–2024

The aim of this paper is to analyse the evolution of labour market performance and human capital development across European countries from 2018 to 2024, with a particular focus on regional disparities and economic outcomes. Utilizing a quantitative analysis of Eurostat data, the study examines five key indicators—employment rate, compensation per employee, GDP per capita, tertiary education attainment, and unemployment rate—across 32 European countries grouped into five regional clusters. The methodology integrates cross-sectional, longitudinal, and composite scoring approaches to capture both static relationships and dynamic trends before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Results indicate substantial variation in labour market performance, with Western and Nordic+ countries achieving higher levels of economic prosperity and employment quality, while Eastern and Southern European countries show more modest outcomes but evidence of convergence over time. The findings underscore the importance of sustained investment in human capital and highlight the role of institutional and structural factors in shaping labour market dynamics. This research contributes to the broader discussion on European labour market policy by providing a comprehensive, comparative perspective and offering recommendations for policymakers seeking to foster balanced, resilient, and inclusive economic growth.
