This edited volume is the outcome of a workshop entitled ?Transformation of Rural Communities in Europe: from Production to Consumption? which was convened by the present editors at the 11th EASA Biennial Conference in Maynooth, Ireland between 24 and 27August, 2010. An interdisciplinary team of academics in social, economic and human geography, development studies, rural sociology, and social anthropology from different countries ? Switzerland, England, Austria, Norway, Romania, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and the Czech Republic gathered to discuss diverse issues related to the post-productivist transition in European rural areas. We identified a variety of themes associated with European rural development. One of the more insistent and overarching themes reflects a concern for modern rurality and the associated connection between endogenous and exogenous change.
