Queering the Spy Thriller Genre: The Case Study of Killing Eve

The chapter looks at how the traditionally patriarchal structure of spy fiction is reimagined in the series Killing Eve. I take Umberto Eco's classic structuralist reading of the James Bond stories and examine how the television series Killing Eve radically rewrites the male-centric paradigm by queering the main characters, Eve and Villanelle, as well as disrupts the genre's traditional moral binary of good and evil through its complex and often contradictory presentation of "hero" and "villain". The new narrative cycle that is developed in the series is analyzed using classical narrative theories, particularly those of Claude Bremond, Tzvetan Todorov and Roland Barthes.
